Celebrating 30 Years of the RICOH GR Series

Ricoh has announced that 2026 marks the 30th anniversary of the iconic RICOH GR series.  The journey began in October 1996 with the launch of the legendary RICOH GR1 film camera.  Over the past three decades, the GR has earned its place as one of the most respected and beloved names in high‑end compact photography.

    Ricoh has expressed its sincere appreciation to photographers worldwide who have supported and trusted the GR series throughout its history.  Looking ahead, the company remains deeply committed to creating products, services, and stories that celebrate the joy, depth, and creativity of photography, particularly the art of the snapshot, for both long‑time GR enthusiasts and those just discovering the system.

    From the original GR1, renowned for its legendary 28mm f/2.8 lens, to the introduction of the GR DIGITAL in 2005 that brought the GR philosophy into the digital age, the series has continued to evolve while staying true to its core values. Most recently, Ricoh introduced the RICOH GR IV in 2025, followed by the GR IV HDR, and earlier this year the GR IV Monochrome, featuring a high‑resolution APS‑C monochrome sensor.

    While technology has advanced significantly over the years, the essence of the GR remains unchanged: exceptional image quality, lightning‑fast responsiveness, true portability, and an uncompromising focus on being the ultimate snapshooting camera.

    Ricoh is celebrating this milestone alongside its global GR community and looking ahead with confidence. Further highlighting this landmark year, the RICOH GR IV was named Best APS‑C Compact Camera at the 2026 TIPA Awards, an honor that reinforces the GR series’ enduring reputation within the snapshooter community.

    To commemorate the 30th anniversary, Ricoh has introduced the message “Forever a Snapshooter”, expressing the GR’s enduring vision of continual evolution in pursuit of the ultimate snapshooting experience.  A dedicated anniversary logo will also debut in 2026 and serve as a key visual throughout the year.  Ricoh has additionally confirmed that special commemorative products and global fan events are in development, with announcements expected this autumn.  We’re very much looking forward to what’s to come.
