Introducing the Leica Summicron-M 66 f/2: A Classic Reinterpreted

Leica has officially expanded its Classic Line with the announcement of the Leica Summicron-M 66 f/2.  Inspired by one of the rarest optical designs in Leica’s history, this release brings a specialized mid-century focal length to the modern M-System.

The Heritage: Developed for the U.S. Navy

The original design dates back to the late 1960s at Ernst Leitz Canada (ELCAN), where optical designer Dr. Walter Mandler developed the ELCAN 66mm f/2 under a contract for the U.S. Navy. Built for military reconnaissance, the optic required a standard exterior form factor paired with exceptional resolution.

Dr. Mandler later noted regarding the original specifications:
“The Naval Intelligence Service wanted a lens that looked like any other but delivered an unparalleled level of resolution.”

With approximately 200 original units produced, the ELCAN 66mm f/2 remains a notable collector's item within the Leica M ecosystem.

A Ground-Up Design

Unlike previous Classic Line offerings adapted from existing production models, the new Summicron-M 66 f/2 represents the first limited-edition Leica lens designed entirely from the ground up. Production is limited to 660 units worldwide, making it the only 66mm focal length currently in Leica's line-up.

• Reversed Distance Scales: To match the orientation of the original ELCAN, the meter and feet focusing scales are reversed compared to standard M-lenses.
• Optical Performance: Wide open, the lens offers a soft rendering with smooth background separation well suited for portraiture. When stopped down, it delivers high edge-to-edge sharpness in keeping with Mandler’s original optical formula

Serial No. 001 at Auction

Leica has also confirmed that serial number 001 of this production run will be offered at the upcoming Leitz Photographica Auction in Wetzlar, presenting a rare opportunity for collectors to acquire the first-numbered example of this edition.
